How to print a photo someone sent you on WhatsApp
The photo you received isn't the photo they took. WhatsApp shrinks pictures so they send quickly, so what lands in your chat is a fraction of the original. If you want to print it, you have two options: ask for it again properly, or enlarge the one you have.
Why it happens
Sending a full-size photo over a phone connection would be slow and expensive, so every messaging app makes a smaller copy and sends that instead. It looks identical in the chat — that's the point — and it looks fine when you save it to your phone.
It stops looking fine when you try to print it. What arrived was built to travel, not to be enlarged.
Ask for it again — the fix that costs nothing
If the person who took it still has it, this is worth thirty seconds. There are two ways, and one is better than the other:
- As a file or document. In WhatsApp, attaching a photo as a document rather than as a photo sends it untouched — byte for byte, exactly as their camera recorded it. The only cost is convenience: it won't preview in the chat, so it has to be downloaded before it can be seen.
- Using HD. Newer versions offer an HD option when sending. It sends a much larger picture — typically around 3,000 pixels on the longest side, against roughly 1,600 for a standard send — but it still re-compresses, so it's not quite the original.
Either beats what you have. If they're standing next to you, AirDrop between iPhones or a shared Google Photos link will also carry the full-size file.
When you can't ask
Sometimes asking isn't an option. The chat is years old, the phone it came from is long gone, or the person who took it's not someone you can message any more.

That makes it worse. A screenshot captures your screen rather than the photo, so you end up with something smaller again.
Will it fix a blurry photo?
It depends what kind of blurry. Softness because the file is small, yes. Out of focus or camera shake when the photo was taken, no — that was never captured.
